Modern Love is a record label based in Manchester, UK founded in 2002 by the staff behind Pelicanneck, the former record store that would soon morph into the estimable online retailer Boomkat. Initially acting an outlet for deep, dystopian electro by the likes of Bitstream and iL.EK.TRO, over the past decade its fortunes have become bound up with the ever-evolving artistry of two producers in particular: Miles Whittaker and Andy Stott, who have clocked up numerous releases for the imprint both solo and as part of duo/group projects like Pendle Coven, Demdike Stare and Millie & Andrea.
During the latter part of the 2000s, Manchester-based DJ/producer Andy Stott transitioned from making high-quality dub techno to releasing a singular and more adventurous strain with an approach that favored leaden tempos and unsettling, sample-based textures. From 2005 through 2011, Stott recorded exclusively for his hometown’s Modern Love label, where he quickly became a key member of the roster alongside fellow travelers Claro Intelecto and Demdike Stare. Demdike Stare is the occult themed collaboration between Sean Canty and Miles Whittaker. Using the stepping stones of vinyl and VHS history as inspiration, and obscure hardware as the means, Demdike Stare create ethereal music that emanates from the unconscious. Cut Hands is a tribal noise project from Edinburgh, Scotland, formed in 2008 by William Bennett, the guiding force behind the recently rested Whitehouse. Cut Hands finds Bennett indulging his love of the African, particularly Ghanaian and Congolese, percussion that he has avidly collected over the years.
